Drug Rehab? Why Can’t I Just Do Drug Detox And Go Home?

Rod MacTaggart

We frequently hear the question when someone addicted to alcohol or drugs is faced with a lengthy drug rehab program: Why can’t I just do drug detox? The answer is painfully simple: to find and solve the problems that drew you into addiction in the first place, and learn how to avoid those pitfalls in the future, you must do a drug rehab program.

If the first real step towards recovery is the decision to handle your addiction once and for all, then drug detox is the second vital step. Almost all drug rehab programs begin with drug detox, when the addict goes through withdrawal. After that, they won’t feel such a burning physical need for their next drink or drug fix, and they won’t collapse or have seizures from the withdrawal symptoms.

To many addicts, this sounds like all they need – after detox, they’ll be cured! No need for three or four or more months of drug rehab!

It’s true that a drug detox can help relieve the often terrible withdrawal symptoms caused by coming off alcohol or drugs. The damage done to your brain and body by alcohol or drugs can be significant, and is usually, if not always, accompanied by some degree of malnutrition and dehydration. A good drug detox includes nutritional work to help boost the effectiveness of your detox. And finally, because detox can be quite an emotional experience, counselors should be there to provide needed support.

All these needs are addressed during a proper drug detox, which can take on average a week or so depending on the person and their addiction. After drug detox you can continue on your road to recovery in drug rehab without the addictive substances that brought you there. Your mind is clearer than it’s been in a long time. Your emotions are freed up, and your reactions to people and life begin to make sense again, rather than being drug-centered. A great drug detox even before drug rehab can provide a big boost to one’s self-worth, vitality and hope for the future.

Drug detox is far from the cure – but it’s a great preview of how life can eventually be. However, nothing has been done yet to address the psychological and emotional factors that led you into your addiction and kept it alive like an evil twin, like a dark shadow on your life. That will be your voyage of discovery in drug rehab – and as you can imagine, it can take a while.

A good drug rehab program will provide new understanding about yourself and your relationships with others and your environment. It will offer you the tools you need to repair the damage your addiction has caused, and prevent it from happening again.

We read recently where someone said that alcohol and drugs don’t make anyone happy, they simply mask the problems that make you unhappy. The road to full self-recovery only begins with drug detox: it ends with however much time it takes later with a successful drug rehab program.

Executive Drug Rehab, Keep Working While In Treatment

Some top professionals and executives cannot abandon their work responsibilities, even to get needed help with addiction and drug or alcohol abuse. The occupational realities of higher level executives may also cause a reluctance to reveal a need for treatment, lest others perceive weakness or incompetence on the job.

Executives can feel powerless over their addiction

Because of these dual realities, many very successful people feel that they cannot get needed addictions treatment, and watch helplessly as addiction intensifies, and the social costs of drug or alcohol abuse mount by the day.

It is unfortunate that executives feel they cannot access treatments out of fear for their privacy, and also that they cannot leave their work responsibilities for even the relatively short period needed for inpatient care, but as this is the situation; executive rehabs were created to help those who cannot get help in any other way (Where to find an executive rehab).

As befitting the standard of living that most senior executives and professionals are accustomed to, executive rehabs offer the finest care and accommodation; but what makes executive rehabs truly different from conventional private rehabs are the measures that are taken to protect the privacy of all participants, and the allowance for some essential work communications and a continuation of responsibilities while in treatment.

Privacy

While all medical treatments are confidential by nature, excessive measures are taken in an executive rehab to maintain compete privacy. An executive rehab will never mail a letter, send a fax or telephone your home or work, lest an assistant or colleague find out about treatment. An executive rehab will also of course never disclose the names of those who receive treatment within.

To maximize privacy, executive rehabs are set in private, secluded and remote locations, far from watchful eyes and far removed from the home and work environment.

Working while in treatment

It would be best if the time spent in rehab was sent focused on healing and recovery alone, but since in the case of too many executives this is simply impossible, executive rehabs allow for the continuation of necessary work communications and a fulfillment of some professional responsibilities, although professionals at the facilities will encourage you to minimize these responsibilities if possible.

Allowing executives to continue some vital work while in treatment greatly increases their flexibility to receive needed care, and also reduces the chances of anyone suspecting anything other than an executive on a normal vacation, maintaining some limited contact while away.

It's not perfect, but it's far better than nothing

It would be best if even executives could benefit from a complete break from work and responsibility and concentrate on health and healing for a month or so, but since this is so often impossible, executive rehabs are the next best thing, and far better than no treatment at all.

Drug Rehab Treatment Healing Ideas

My friend Susan was going on vacation for a month and asked me to substitute for her at the local drug rehab center at her Wednesday yoga and meditation class.

It truly was an experience I'll never forget as I watched people's bodies and minds relax.I was struck by the strong determination that was applied towards learning the different forms of breathing as well as various meditations. I think the residents found it helpful to see they could channel the same drive they had used to locate drugs to their own healing.

It's always good to use try and direct the natural tendencies you have for a higher purpose. For instance, an "addictive" personality can redirect this to areas such as meditation, exercise or writing a journal. This I have found is much better than fighting with oneself and trying to "stop" one's tendencies. This is one's passion and it should be used for one's evolution.

If you are taking yoga please keep in mind it's not about competing with others but in "stretching " yourself inwardly further than you thought you could go. If you can be patient when you hold a posture, that quality will also carry into daily life as well.

You also will develop tools you can use for stressful situations such as deep breathing, visualizations of your true potential and inner joy. Even if you only feel good for an hour
after doing some yoga or meditation , it is a center that grows and you can remember it when you become agitated around other residents or towards your parents.

Robin, a 20 year old, fighting prescription drug addiction said to me that she just wanted to ease the pain but realized that pain is a feeling she could watch. It really was wonderful to see the ability to watch one's mind that the residents developed with a little practice. In the east they return to the mind as a drunken monkey-not just wandering from thought to thought, but a drunken monkey stung by a scorpion. Sometimes it seems so restless and jumpy, plus out of control. Take a few moments to watch it and discover some true jewels.

Drug Rehab Chronicles – Beware Of Prescription Drug Combinations

Rod MacTaggart

After years of drug abuse, Vicki Lynn Marshall finally met her end with a deadly combination of prescription and over-the-counter drugs. The jury’s still out on whether the cause of death was accidental or otherwise, but one thing is certain – had Vicki Lynn completed a successful drug rehab long ago, she would likely be alive today.

For Vickie Lynn, the spiral to the autopsy table started years ago. Drug and alcohol abuse, dependency, and perhaps addiction, were part of her lifestyle. But when a series of adverse personal events led her to combine several prescription drugs, she was physically pushed over the edge.

The long list on the pathologist’s report was shocking. At the time of her death, she had consumed not two or three, or even four drugs – the autopsy found nine different prescription drugs and one powerful over-the-counter medication, at least five or six of which cascaded into the next, adding to and increasing their effects:

1. Cipro, a powerful antibiotic used to handle bacterial and viral infections

2.Chloral hydrate, a sedative and hypnotic to help her sleep

3. Benadryl, an OTC antihistamine

4. Four powerful tranquilizers

5. Atropine

6. Topiramate, an anticonvulsant now prescribed for migraines

Although the antibiotic was obviously needed to handle an infection, the sedatives and tranquilizers were indicative of needing drug rehab to get down to the bottom of what was causing the drug abuse. And the sedatives and tranquilizers, along with the antihistamine, atropine and Topiramate, are what actually killed her - each of them depresses respiration and circulation and, in Vicki Lynn’s case, these systems became so depressed they simply shut down. “She didn't suffer,” the pathologist said, “she went to sleep."

According to her autopsy records, Vickie Lynn Marshall died of an “acute combined drug intoxication” complicated by two minor infections, neither of which was dangerous if treated properly. Taken singly, none of the drugs was life-threatening, and none was an overdose.

Could Vicki Lynn’s life have been saved? Probably everything possible was done in the end but, factually, the problem started years ago – when she became dependant on drugs and alcohol. Had Vicki Lynn, or someone who cared about her, recognized the signs and made sure she got through a drug rehab program that addressed the issues behind her drug abuse, she may not have turned to drugs when events seemed to conspire against her and she may be alive today.

Which Drug Rehab Or Alcohol Treatment Level Of Care Is Best?

Bill Urell

Before we look for a drug rehab or alcohol treatment program, we have to look at the level of care needed and assess the severity of the problem. Just as there are various levels of use of mood altering drugs, there are various levels of treatment avaialable. Within each clarification there are variances of cost, and length of treatment. Here are some levels of care and examples of what may be appropriate for a situation.

Brief Therapy/Intervention - This is usually a very short duration program, but can be very effective. Perhaps a person who really is not involved with alcohol over does it one time on a birthday or New Years and is caught on their first DUI. They may be mandated to attend alcohol classes where education is provided for a few weeks.

Detoxification - The idea that detox is drug treatment is a common misconception. The purpose of a 'Detox' is to safely monitor and de-escalate an incident of intoxification. Generally, as soon as you are medically stable (which is not recovery treatment) you are dismissed from the hospital or facility. Supervised detox is recommended for long term alcohol or benzodiazepine (Xanax, Ambien etc) users as the risk of seizures exists. This may be a required first step before entering treatment.

Outpatient Program - This is non-residential treatment usually consisting of attending a therapy group and/or individual counseling once or twice/week. This may be appropriate for a person whose use is starting to cause problems, but is not yet dependent

Intensive Outpatient Program - This is non residential but generally consists of 16-20 hours of group and individual therapy per week. Insurance is more likely to cover this form of treatment rather than inpatient treatment. This is less costly than residential, but is appropriate for a person with full dependency. Outpatient programs may be used as a 'step down' after completing residential treatment

Inpatient Treatment - This is your classic 'drug rehab'. It is residential and the programs generally consist of a full day of activities and may last from 4 weeks to a year. It is the most intense form of treatment and these facilities are usually equipped to handle additional global problems associated with addiction such as mental health, physical, emotional and spiritual areas.

I am definitely biased. That being said, I would recommend inpatient treatment for anyone with addiction or chemical dependency. The primary advantage is that the evidence is clear that a longer exposure to treatment increases the probability of a good outcome. One disadvantage is that inpatient treatment can be costly and insurance generally does not cover it.

The important thing is to get a proper professional assessment so you can be matched with an appropriate level of care.

Drug Free Rehab vs. Medication As A Drug Rehab

Lora French

I do not understand western medicine’s fascination with medication. It seems these days that everyone is searching for a pill that will be the answer to all of their ailments. Take this pill for that. Take that pill for this. Research which drug will cure this or aid with that. It simply goes on and on. We have become a medicated nation.

I am baffled by this when we see the consequences of drug addiction in our communities. We think our problems with addiction will be solved if only we can get a handle on the meth problem or the heroin problem or the marijuana problem. We can’t see that many of the medications that are being handed by our doctors and pharmacies can be just has destructive as so-called street drugs. What’s frightening to me is that we are trying to solve the drug addiction problem in our country by creating new drugs that these drug addicts can take to cure their drug addiction.

Does this faulty thinking make any sense? Are more drugs truly the only way to handle a drug addict’s drug problem? Why can’t we provide those suffering from addiction with a comprehensive drug free rehab program? Yes, I said it. Drug-free. This means skip the methadone clinic. Skip the Subaxone. Skip the anti-depressants. Skip the quick fix.

The cover story for the July 16, 2007 issue of Time Magazine delves into the nature of addiction and how “new brain research is helping us understand why we get hooked.” The researchers involved use addicts’ brains to “design new drugs that are showing promise in cutting off the craving that drives an addict irresistibly toward relapse.” Great! Right? If an addict just didn’t crave the drug, he would be fine.Partially, yes. But there is so much more to what causes an individual to get hooked on drugs. There are always underlying issues that the once sober individual is trying to escape. Giving an addict a drug to stop the craving only addresses a part of the problem. There must be drug free ways to reduce the cravings an addict experiences and provide a complete drug free rehab for the drug addict.

Holistic approaches to drug addiction have been developed and have been proven to work. One such program, the New Life Detoxification program offered at Narconon Vista Bay, truly addresses the cravings an addict experiences by cleansing the body of drug residues in a drug free setting, using vitamins and a sauna program at its base. The end result is that the cravings for drugs have disappeared. However, the program also addresses the underlying causes for the addiction in the first place. None of these wonder drugs for addiction deal with the root causes, which in all honesty, makes me question the motivation behind developing these types of drugs.

Who profits from these wonder drugs? Is it the drug addict who now has to support his new habit? What happens to this addict when he can’t afford to get his medication? Will he return to using the bad street drugs and find himself caught in the trap of addiction all over again? These drugs to cure addiction are new. That means long term side effects are unknown. What will they be? What side effects will the addict have to deal with?

We have already seen what happens to those on methadone. We know that Subaxone is classified as a narcotic. We have seen that Ritalin, a methamphetamine, causes serious problems for our children. And yet, we keep pushing this idea that medication is the answer to addiction. When will see that drug free rehab is truly the only solution to our drug addiction problems?

Opening A Drug Rehab Center

It is not easy to open a residential drug treatment center. You would have to get approval from the state health department and the proper finances for the same. The proper facilities will have to be established. You will have to hire good support staff as well.

You will have to make a treatment plan based on a particular framework. This framework of the tailored treatment plan will have to be remodelled to suit everyone’s individual needs. Loans and grants will be needed to get the funds together. Keep the treatment model ready to show to people who might then approve of the loan for your residential drug treatment center.

Once the funding is done, you will have to get a building for the center. A single building or even a series of smaller buildings will be fine. Smaller buildings would be preferred by the patients as they would be able to have some privacy and independence. The state will have to give written permission for you to set up this rehab center. Also obtain contacts with health insurance companies because many people cannot afford to pay for their rehab treatment and rely on insurance companies to do it for them. Administrators, doctors, nurses, therapists and health technicians will also be needed in the rehab center. Once all this is taken care of, you can advertise over the internet, in the newspapers, in churches and offices of doctors. When you make the advertisement out, mention the kind of treatment the rehab center offers, cost of the treatment, kinds of addictions treated, insurance carriers accepted and contact information. Licensing and certification are important steps in the set up of the rehab center.

Once you open a drug rehab for men center, you find the work extremely rewarding. It is a noble cause. Though this is a business that pays well, money should not be the primary concern. If you can make your patients comfortable and even add some luxury items and packages to your rehab center, more patients will enrol. What facilities and staff you can provide, will determine the kind of drug rehab for men center you have set up. You will have to offer post rehab care to patients as well. Check what your competitors are like. This will give you a very good idea of what your needs will be.

Which Is Better, Private Drug Rehab Or Public Drug Rehab?

Christian Shire

After admitting to a problem with substance abuse, and deciding to get help, and after deciding that a residential drug or alcohol rehab offers you the best chance at sobriety, you still have to decide between the thousands of available rehabs within the country.

Even when you narrow down the search by rehabs close to home, depending on where you live, you may still be left with many options, and of those options, there will likely be both for profit, and non profit rehabs available.

So which is better, a non profit, or a for profit rehab?

At first glance, the non profit rehab seems to the better choice, and in some cases it may be. The non profit rehab ideally uses all of the admission fees directly into your care, and does not exist to make a profit off of the suffering of others. A non profit is likely staffed by dedicated and impassioned professionals and recovering addicts, and may offer good value for the money, and it will almost certainly be cheaper!

A private facility, by definition is looking to make a profit, and as such a percentage of the admission payment is not going to your care bills, but to the ownership of the facility. Additionally there are some private operators that do run substandard programs, and although they may promise great things, do not offer nearly as much once they get your check cashed and you're in the door.

Why a private facility is often the better choice

But, if you have good insurance coverage (which should pay for a majority of your care) or have the means to fund your own treatment, a quality private facility is probably the better choice, and offers you the best chance at sobriety.

A quality private facility will charge far more, but will offer greater comfort and more private accommodation, will offer better staff to patient ratios, will offer more individual therapy with a trained and licensed therapist or psychologist, and are often set in beautiful and tranquil environments, ideally suited to the self reflection and medications of rehab.

A private facility is also more likely well equipped with peripheral programming and equipment very beneficial to recovery. More likely to have a good gym, yoga and meditation classes and other programming which does not sound all that necessary, but can actually contribute quite a lot to the experience.

The first step is making sure that any private facility under consideration is worthy of your dollars, does enjoy a good reputation, and offers quality and comprehensive programming. But if it does, it is probably the best available option.

If you have insurance coverage that minimizes your total contribution into the treatment costs, you should almost certainly seek out a quality private facility.

Any rehab is better than no rehab!

Of course any treatment is better than no treatment, and if your financial reality does not allow for participation in a better private facility, you need to evaluate the available options and select the best, which may well be a non profit or public institution.

The best private facilities are far better than anything else on offer, and if you have the money or coverage, they are well worthy of an investment in your future sobriety and happiness. Do your research, ask around (ask your doctor, ask the local health board) and get the best treatment you can reasonably afford.

The best non profit is FAR better than the worst for profit, but in general and on average; you get what you pay for.
